KIARA

Kiara couldn’t tell for how long Deryg and that Leyra female were gone for. It could’ve been an eternity or five minutes.

The storm of disbelief inside her distorted time and everything around her. She couldn’t hear the murmurs in the room any longer. She had no idea when Rexan fucked off to after he’d turned her world upside down.

No, that was a lie.

Rexan hadn’t done it.

Deryg had.

Rexan was a stranger who’d just delivered a message.

Deryg was the one who hadn’t told Kiara he was basically engaged. Or maybe even married. No matter how much she’d listened to Darcy, Alissia, and Lily gush about their Deruzian matches, she didn’t quite understand the legality of being mated.

Whatever the case, there was a female in Deryg’s life he hadn’t mentioned. He’d kissed Kiara. He’d made her cum. He’d made her promises he obviously couldn’t keep.

Kiara felt betrayed. No, Kiara was betrayed.

The floor seemed to vanish from underneath her as a great chasm of anger and grief swallowed her whole. She was angry at Deryg for misleading her. She was angry at herself for believing him.

Maybe her mom was right. She couldn’t do anything right, no matter how hard she tried.

“Kiara, are you alright?” Carol asked, as if from another dimension. She placed her hand gently on Kiara’s shoulder, bringing her back to reality.

Kiara flinched as the world around her slowly started taking shape again. The chatter around her, the soft string music in the background, the clinks of glass, the aroma of sauteed shrimp, and Carol’s concerned face staring straight at her.

“I’m fine, just tired,” Kiara said.

Tired of this bullshit, that’s what she was.

Of believing Deryg and him having the absolute gall to just walk away with that Deruzian female at a party Kiara had organized.

Who did he think he was? And why did it hurt Kiara so much? It felt like someone had splintered her heart with a rusty spear.

But nothing could prepare her for Leyra walking back into the party with a smile on her face that was considered wide by Deruzian standards. Before, she’d floated instead of walking. Now she seemed to be a goddess incarnate, come to bless the mortals with her presence.

She was gorgeous, too. Of course she was, Deryg wouldn’t mate with a nobody.

Like you, a slithery voice hissed in her mind.

Kiara shook her head. But she couldn’t stop looking at Leyra as the female walked toward her. Just as she passed Kiara, their eyes met. Leyra’s smile grew in sync with Kiara’s despair.

The shock of it must have numbed her all over again. Kiara was distantly aware Carol was talking to her, but she couldn’t make out a word.

A tingling sensation coursed down Kiara’s spine. Someone was watching her.

No, not just someone.

Deryg.

Her gaze instantly met his, as if she had some kind of compass. The son of a bitch didn’t even have the good manners to look guilty. He just looked…well, like Deryg. Hot, determined, protective Deryg, who was frowning at her, as if he didn’t quite understand what was going on.
